Major Exhibition at the Whitworth Art Gallery
1st August 2026 to 29th August 2027
Ghislaine Howard’s powerful painting The New Child takes centre stage in The Labour of Care, a major new exhibition at the Whitworth Art Gallery in Manchester.
Created following Ghislaine’s four-month residency at Saint Mary’s Maternity Unit in 1993, The New Child forms part of her acclaimed series exploring pregnancy, birth and the shared human experience. The body of work was first exhibited at Manchester Art Gallery before travelling to the Wellcome Collection in London.
Developed in partnership with Manchester University Hospitals NHS Foundation Trust, The Labour of Care brings together newly created artworks by healthcare professionals alongside works from the Whitworth’s internationally renowned collection, including Marina Abramović, L.S. Lowry, Caroline Walker and Ghislaine Howard.
The exhibition explores childbirth, compassion and the emotional resilience of those working on the frontline of maternal healthcare, celebrating the everyday acts of care that shape lives and communities.
Visitors can experience The New Child as part of The Labour of Care at the Whitworth Art Gallery from 1st August 2026 until 29th August 2027.
