It is thrilling to have the opportunity to curate a selection of my work at the Greater Manchester Chamber of Commerce.
I have chosen as a theme for this fabulous space the idea of the journey – from our first faltering steps to those of our later years. I have also been able to share an ambitious project that I’m working on at the moment – to produce a credible painting to mark the 200th anniversary of the Peterloo Massacre, so I’ve been looking even harder than usual at Goya and Delacroix and others who have been so important to me and of course, my experience in painting the ‘365 Series’ helps too, but whether or not I can succeed in doing so is reflected in the title I’ve given it: ‘Towards an Impossible Painting’.
Study after Poussin’s ‘Massacre of the Innocents’, c. 1628-9, painted at the height of the Thirty Years’ War. Referenced by Picasso and Bacon.
