On the 16th August, 1819, something like 100,000 people walked towards St. Peter’s Fields in central Manchester, gathering together to campaign peacefully for parliamentary reform. The meeting was brutally dispersed. In the resulting debacle, at least 15 people were killed and between 400–700 suffered injuries. The 200th anniversary of that event falls this year.

Ghislaine Howard, who is well-known for her daily paintings taken from the contemporary news media (the 365 Series), felt compelled to produce a response to that historical event, hoping to avoid the many traps that await such a venture. Can oil paint still claim the authority that has now, it seems, been given over to film and all things digital? Hence the title of this project: ‘Towards an Impossible Painting’.
